Charlotte Laws, who claimed to have had a three-year affair with the singer, passed a message onto the 75-year-old, saying his wife ‘knew she was the love of your life’
The former mistress of Sir Tom Jones has told how the singer’s late wife Linda was the real “love of his life”.
Charlotte Laws claimed she had a three-year affair with Sir Tom after he seduced her at a concert in 1979.
At the time he had already been married to Linda for 22 years.
On Monday, hours after news broke of Linda’s death, Charlotte said: “Condolences on the passing of lovely Linda. I’m heartbroken for you and your family.
“She knew she was the love your life.”
Melinda Rose Woodward, known affectionately as Lady Linda, died in Los Angeles on Sunday, aged 75, after a “short but fierce” battle with cancer.
Sir Tom, 75, was by her side, cancelling the Asian leg of his world tour to be with her.
Their marriage lasted for 59 years with Tom openly admitting to cheating on Linda and even bedding up to 250 a year at the height of his fame.
Charlotte, now 55, has previously described how she first met Sir Tom as an 18-year-old US virgin and they became romantically involved after a Florida concert in 1979.
In a 2015 interview, Charlotte said: “I told him it was my first time, and he held my hand and said, ‘Are you sure you want to go through with this?’ He was a real gentleman.
“I met Tom’s mum, dad, sister and, of course, Mark. There was nothing secretive about our relationship.”
Gushing about her own experience with the star, Charlotte claimed the Delilah singer never spoke disrespectfully of his wife, never did drugs, and didn’t drink to excess, although she claimed wife Linda “ignored his behaviour”.
She added: “Linda knew and didn’t choose to make an issue of it. She wanted to stay married to him, that was basically what he told me in a nutshell.”
Sir Tom finally dumped Charlotte after she confided to a member of his team that she was anti-abortion and would keep the singer’s baby if she became pregnant.
They allegedly told her: “Tom can’t see you any more. Sorry. I can’t allow you backstage and don’t try calling the suite.”
She added: “I was in disbelief and in floods of tears. I was devastated.”
Charlotte now lives in Los Angeles and is married to an Oxford-educated lawyer.
Sir Tom also enjoyed a two-year fling with Mary Wilson of The Supremes, and another with the then Miss World Marjorie Wallace.
His relationship with Marjorie, then 19, was uncovered in 1976 when they were pictured kissing on a beach in Barbados.
She was stripped of her Miss World crown, and when Sir Tom realised Linda was going to learn about the infidelity, he told the beauty queen it was over.
Devastated Marjorie took an overdose of sleeping pills and ended up in a coma but survived.
The star also fathered a love child with model Katherine Berkery with whom he had a four-day fling. He originally denied the child was his but he subsequently paid maintenance for him, although apart from that has not acknowledged his son.
