Four editors tried neck contouring. Find out what happened.
Neck contouring is a beauty trend that seeks to define the contours of the neck. Perhaps to make it slim, longer or even sexier. Let’s find out what happened after four editors of Seventeen tried it out themselves.
It’s only possible to make so many versions of the smokey eye, so beauty lovers have gone looking for other body parts to put makeup on. We’ve already done ear makeup and hand makeup, so neck contouring is the logical next step, I guess.
Girls on Instagram are using bronzer and highlighter to make their necks look… what? Skinnier? More angular? Honestly, we really don’t get what this is supposed to do, so to find out, four Seventeen.com editors tried it out.
The results were amusing to say the least.

“Even though getting my neck contoured felt like a nice neck message, I don’t know if I’ll be using this technique in real life. When I looked at a picture of the back of my neck, I didn’t feel like it looked particularly thin or long. In which case, what’s the point? I also don’t have the patience to go through the challenge of applying it myself. I’d much rather just wear my hair down if I’m not feeling the back of my neck one day. lol.”

“Getting my neck contoured felt nice, kind of like a soft massage. But it involved way more effort than I thought it would. I didn’t even have time to do anything with my hair today — there’s no way I would ever take the time to contour my neck. I can’t really imagine a situation where I’d ever do this, especially since you can’t do it without a friend’s help.”

“It felt really weird getting it done. It sort of tickled and I was trying not to burst out laughing. I don’t really see the difference tbh, so I probably would never do it to myself (and honestly, I don’t even think my arms stretch back that far). Plus, afterward my neck felt super itchy.”

“I actually tried to contour my own neck, like the girl does in the videos. It actually didn’t turn out too badly, but when I tried to recreate the look a second time, it was a total disaster. I could see maybe doing this for prom if you were planning on taking excessive photos of the back of your hair, but other than that, I don’t really see a reason for it. My neck is ~beautiful~ just the way it is!”
